Mahatma Gandhi was a great and powerful leader of India. He is one of the greatest leaders that history has ever produced. He was not only a great politician but also a great social and religious leader. Mahatma Gandhi was born in the Indian Hindu Family on the 2nd of October in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He added the name Mahatma due to his work. Gandhi is also known as Bapu, and the Father of the Nation.
His father Karamchand Gandhi was the Chief Minister (Diwan) of Porbandar at that time. His mother Putlibai was a very noble and religious leader. He was sent to school at the age of seven. At school, he was not a bright student. But he was very honest and hard-working. He was married to Kasturba at the age of thirteen. He passed the entrance examination at the age of seventeen. Then he went to England for higher education. Mahatma Gandhi did Law in England and returned to India as a barrister in 1891.
In South Africa, he campaigned against the British for the violation of dark coloured Asians and became successful. Gandhi returned to India in 1915 and joined the Indian National Congress. He joined Gokhale’s group. Gopal Krishna Gokhale is considered the political guru of Mahatma Gandhi.
As a part of the independence struggle, Gandhi launched many important movements such as Kheda Satyagraha, Champaran Satyagraha, Salt Satyagraha, non-cooperation, Civil Disobedience, and Quit India Movement. The Quit India Movement was the greatest success, with all the Indians protesting under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi. This was the last movement against the British, and they were forced to leave India. As a result, India achieved Independence.
“The Story of My Experiments with Truth” is the autobiography of Gandhi, covering his life from childhood through to 1921. ‘Non-violence’ is the main weapon of Gandhi against independence. He inspired civil rights and freedom across the world. So 15th June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 2nd October as the International Day of Non-violence.

His birth anniversary is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti in India. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to remember Gandhi’s sacrifice, peace, and non-violence. Every year, Gandhi Jayanti is feasted at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. The Prime Minister and the President of India gather there to pay the tribute by offering flowers to Gandhi’s samadhi. And sang his favourite song.
Mahatma Gandhi was a great freedom fighter who spent his whole life in the struggle for the independence of India. He lived his entire life as a leader of the Indian people. He spent his life fighting against British rule for the freedom of the Indian people. While fighting with the British, he took the help of his great weapons like non-violence and Satyagraha. He got arrested and sent to jail many times, but he was never discouraged. He was a great personality who served his entire life till death for the motherland. He proved that everything is possible with the non-violence and unity of people.
Even though he played a major role in obtaining freedom for India, he couldn’t enjoy the fruits of his struggle. He was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse.
